About

Vishal Gupta

I’m the Dean’s Associate Professor of Data Sciences and Operations at the USC Marshall School of Business, with a courtesy appointment in Industrial & Systems Engineering at USC Viterbi.

Before USC, I studied mathematics and philosophy at Yale, completed Part III of the Mathematics Tripos at Cambridge, and spent four years as a quant at Barclays Capital working on commodities modeling, derivatives pricing and risk management. I missed working toward a larger mission, so I left finance for a PhD in Operations Research at MIT, which I completed in 2014.

My research is on data-driven decision-making, optimization, and learning, especially when data are scarce or noisy.
